Project 08

Terrace re-roofed, six houses

Six houses in one terrace re-roofed in sequence, phased so no house was open at the end of a working day and the whole run came off one batch of slate.

Location
Romsey, Hampshire
Completed
2022
A stone terrace with dormers and chimney stacks under a heavy sky.

The problem, and the number

On a terrace the risk is not the roofing, it is the sequencing and the party walls. Each house was stripped, felted and battened inside one day, so nothing sat under sheeting overnight and no household had scaffolding outside the bedroom window longer than it had to.

All the slate came off one batch. Colour and thickness drift between batches and it shows badly across a continuous run, so the whole order was placed at once and stored on site rather than bought house by house. The party wall upstands were re-leaded as we went.

Scope: phased strip and re-slating, leadwork, guttering
